St Tropez

Located on the French Riviera St Tropez used to be a military stronghold and a rather unassuming fishing village, until the arrival of the 20th century. During World War II, it was the first French coastal town to be liberated and from the end of the war, it began developing a reputation both at home and overseas, as a seaside resort, famous for its artisan welcome, due to the large number of artists who moved to the area.

From this time onwards it soon established itself as a destination for both the American and European jet set and the place to aim for amongst tourists, who were keen to find authentic Provencal charm, as well as the opportunity to make spot the occasional celebrity or two.

One of St Tropez’s most famous residents is Brigitte Bardot, who arrived in the village in the 1950’s to star in the film ‘And God created woman’, transforming it, almost overnight, to a celebrity drawing, jet set uber-destination. Now at Vieux Port, Super –Yachts are plentiful as are the tourists who come to spot them

However St Tropez has still managed to preserve its more tranquil side, away from the height of the summer, when up to 100,000 visitors make a pilgrimage to the resort. Out of the main season, St Tropez can be appreciated for its charm and authentic beauty, where you can wander along the cobblestone lanes and take in the day to day life of the old fishing quarter in La Ponche, watch locals enjoy a game or two of pentaque, or simply enjoy what the many beaches have to offer, viewed from the coastal path.
