The old town, also known as the Citadel or Intra Muros ( 'within the walls' ), was originally built on a at the mouth of the Rance estuary, on a rocky island. A strategic position which allowed it to control both the sea and any trade that was heading into Brittany, and also help create its colour history, with pirates and smugglers a plenty.

Today, many people consider St Malo to be the most attractive channel port in the country, with wonderful cobbled street, chock full of bars, shops, restaurants and hotels.
